During one of her trips to Guadalajara, Mexico, California native and experienced speech pathologist Margarita Fajardo had a transformative encounter at an orphanage. There, she met Conchita, a young girl with cerebral palsy who had been abandoned at a city dump.
Conchita’s life took a turn when a garbage collector rescued her and brought her to a home called Bienaventurados de Jesus, which housed 19 other disabled children and young adults. Inspired by their resilience, Margarita returned the following year with additional therapists and specialized equipment to improve the children’s communication skills.
Thus, Children of Mexico International was created.
